14. Unboxing clever!

If you read my previous post, you will know that I have just spent the princely sum of €20 on a mobile phone to obtain an Irish number. With this, I hope to improve my chances of being contacted by an employer when sending out my CV, as I think using a UK number may not be the best tactic and could dissuade people from getting in touch.

My new phone arrived this morning by courier. How exactly the courier knew where to deliver the parcel, I have no clue, as there are no postcodes in the Republic of Ireland.

The address I supplied was three lines in total. After being reassured by my Airbnb host that this was indeed correct and not a shortened version of his address, it looked like this:

Housing Estate Name (For Mr x)
Renvyle
Ireland

Here are a few shots of said phone:

I inserted the SIM card and plugged the phone into the mains power to charge up. The very second it received power, I had a text message alert. Bearing in mind this was a brand new phone and number, I expected it to be a “welcome to Meteor” courtesy message. (Meteor being the network provider).

Wrong.

The message said:

“Well Dave is it possible to work this Sunday cos i’m looking for next Sunday the 22nd off or il do during the week”

102

I racked my brain to try and understand how someone could have obtained my number, when I didn’t know it myself!

Well, what a bargain, a job offer right out of the box!!

I sent a reply to the text and asked their name and place of work.

After half a dozen messages or so back and forth, it turned out that it was a complete coincidence and the person had entered my phone number by mistake. By what are the chances of them using my name AND mentioning doing work for them?!!!

We carried on messaging throughout the day and loosely agreed to meet for a beer next time I am in Limerick (where the person lives).

Piano

As I have a lot of time on my hands at the moment and I’m trying not to spend money, now would be the perfect time to learn to play the piano. (It also helps that there is one in the corner of the lounge!).

I have never played the piano before but have always fancied having a go at The Scientist by Coldplay. There are a few other simple songs that I’d love to try as well, but I’ll stick to one at a time!

I’ve pretty much mastered the chord progression of the verses. I’m quite slow, but it sounds great. Speed will come in time. It’s great spending half a day enjoying learning something new, purely for pleasure. I must remember to do this kind of thing more often.
