11. Bon voyage

The ferry has now finally been booked. ONE-WAY to Ireland.

The sailing route is Fishguard Harbour, Pembrokeshire, Wales, to Rosslare Harbour, County Wexford, Ireland.

I travel at 2.45pm arriving at 6.45pm on Monday 3rd August 2015. Cost £160 total.

I’m beside myself with excitement and also have a tiny weeny lacing of fear at the thought of doing this entirely alone, but hey, this is living!

My plans have been delayed by about a week, owing to a moron in the USA, who partially drained my newly opened Irish bank account of €2200 euros in small amounts over a few days at various ATMs. Had a call from the bank and got it sorted very quickly, meaning my debit card was then cancelled and a new one issued to me as well as the stolen money being reimbursed. I’ve been hanging around waiting for the card to arrive in the post before booking the ferry. Thanks moron.

Hopefully I can make it across the sea without the serious wooziness this time around. That would would be a more positive start to things. But nobody said it would be plainsailing! (Sorry couldn’t resist!)

All the items I am taking with me have been gradually accumulating and are now together in a final blob….in the lounge. Will chuck everything in the van today – 1st August 2015.

I pictured there being more gubbins to pack. In reality, what I NEED boils down to passport, wallet. Everything else is a bonus. Theoretically, I don’t NEED a passport to enter or leave Ireland as a UK citizen, but it would be dumb not to take it, as I can still be asked to provide it at any point if stopped by the Garda (police).

Packed

Summary of the items I have gathered together for the trip:

My shiny new iPhone 6 Plus 😀
A selection of books
Toiletry stuff
Clothes and shoes
Print-outs of CV, previous employer reference, various other bits of important paperwork
Map
Camera gear
Water barrel and tins of food for emergency rations!
Bike panniers
Bike (not pictured)
Bedding
Cables and charging bits and bobs for phone, camera etc.

Other than that, I’ll buy a good amount of fuel on route to the ferry and top-up the windscreen water.

Next time you hear from me, I’ll be in Ireland, or will post from the ferry!

Wish me luck 🙂
